Join us as the National Jazz Museum in Harlem Director Loren Schoenberg takes us on a musical journey in an revealing dialogue with award-winning trumpeter Etienne Charles.   Then we'll swing right into a jazz fused Afro-Caribbean groove with Etienne Charles at the helm of the NJMH Allstars.

Birds" (2008) 

June 4 – June 13

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, June 4 @ 7pm.

On view through September 13.

Perspectives: Women, Art and Islam presents five female artists whose major connection is their personal relationship with Islam. Spanning three continents and the media of video, photography and installation, Perspectives features work by Fariba Alam, Zoulikha Bouabdellah, Mahwish Chishty, Safaa Erruas and Nsenga Knight, and explores the connections, or lack thereof, between the various Muslim communities in their lives. Perspectives is co-organized by MoCADA and the Museum for African Art, and is presented in conjunction with Muslim Voices: Arts and Ideas, a city-wide, multi-institutional celebration of the extraordinary range of artistic expression in the Muslim world.

OPENING RECEPTION

THURSDAY, JUNE 4      7:00 – 9:00 pm

Please join us for the first viewing of Perspectives: Women, Art and Islam. This reception will be the first event of Muslim Voices: Arts and Ideas and will include refreshments and live music by DJ Tikka Masala. You will also have the chance to view Hayat Gul: Muslim Perspectives in the foyer of the James E. Davis 80 Arts Building from May 21 – June 14.  Free to the public.

 

ARTIST TALK

SATURDAY, JUNE 6      2:00 – 4:00pm

The exhibiting artists will speak about their work and the influence of Islam on their creative process. Exhibition curators Kimberli Gant and Lisa Binder will lead a discussion on the exhibition theme and curatorial process. Free to the public.

 

LECTURE SERIES

TUESDAY, JUNE 9        6:30 – 8:30pm

Dr. Halima Taha, one of the leading authorities on collecting African-American art and an active follower of Islam, will discuss the history of Islam in the United States and misconceptions about the roles of women within the religion. Admission: $5. Free for MoCADA and MfAA members.

 

LECTURE SERIES

THURSDAY, JUNE 11    6:30 – 8:30pm

Dr. Kinsey Katchka, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art, will discuss women artists in the Islamic world and recent trends in exhibitions of their work. Admission: $5. Free for MoCADA and MfAA members.

 

MOSAIC PROGRAM FOR KIDS

SATURDAY, JUNE 13    2:00 – 4:00pm

Families will  work with artist Hayat Gul to complete a large mosaic of President Barack Obama, while learning some basic history of the mosaic art form and using colored mylar to create their own mini-mosaics to take home with them. Fun for the whole family! Free to the public.
