The "Roby"
as it will affectionately become known, will be awarded to an
outstanding and historic individual who has demonstrated a continued
commitment to the development of her or his craft, contributed
unselfishly of her or his time to social and community causes, and
is respected by her or his peers and the public at large, nationally
and internationally.
Presented in honor of Paul Robeson
(1898 - 1976) — world-renowned singer, athlete, intellectual, actor,
activist, lecturer, and humanitarian.
MUSEUM FACILITY
The National Black
Sports & Entertainment Hall of Fame (NBS&E Hall of Fame) will have
its very own museum facility with an educational, historical, and
informational purpose and become a major New York tourist
destination. The site selection committee consists of chairman
Edward Myers, Esq., Chairman, Myers, Smith, Granady Real Estate, the
Office of the Manhattan Borough President, the Office of the
Congressman Charles B. Rangel, New York City Economic Development
Corporation, and the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone.
HISTORIC WALK-OF-FAME
Each Spring
beginning in 2002, all of the National Black Sports & Entertainment
Hall of Fame (NBS&E Hall of Fame) and Museum inductees of the
previous year will be permanently placed in a Harlem Walk-of-Fame,
which will be located on West 135th Street (Between 5th
and St. Nicholas Avenues), due to the historical and cultural
importance of this particular street. West 135th Street
is home to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture,
Harlem YMCA, Hansborough Recreation Center, Jackie Robinson Youth
Center, James Weldon Houses, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Houses,
Lieutenant Joseph Kennedy Center, Harlem Hospital, and Lenox
Terrace, to name a few. The Walk-of Fame initiative will be done in
concert with the offices of the Manhattan Borough President C.
Virginia Fields; Hon. Congressman Charles B. Rangel; State Senator
David A. Paterson; Assemblyman Keith L.T. Wright; Councilman Bill
Perkins; NYC & Company; the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce;
Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone; Central Harlem Local Development
Corporation; and Community Board 10.
INAUGURAL EVENT
The first annual
NBS&E Hall of Fame event took place on Wednesday, August 29th,
2001, at Aaron Davis Hall in New York City. It will be an event
to help generate the seed monies for the building of the NBS&E Hall
of Fame museum complex. |
